The number of heating and air conditioning companies in Virginia Beach, the city I live in, as in many cities across the nation, is completely disproportionate to the actual need for heating and cooling. Although Virginia Beach has three to four months of hot summer temperatures, rarely does it climb into the mid to upper nineties for any measurable amount of time.

And, as far as winters go… we had a picnic and enjoyed seventy degree weather the day after Christmas! It can get cold but it does not often fall into the teens or single digits with the average winter temps around 46 degrees.

There is a need for heating and air conditioning in the Virginia Beach area but nothing drastic or reason to have several hundred heating and cooling companies all going after the same customers. So, why are there so many of them if the weather is not extreme and supply out weighs demand by a long shot?

Well, I don’t have a definitive answer for you but if you find yourself in need of heating or air conditioning repair you can certainly use these numbers to your advantage!

These guys basically starve six months out of the year during the mild spring and fall months but try and “make up” for it in the busy season. As I mentioned though, there is not enough work to go around even in the busy times and knowing this will allow you to negotiate pricing… yes, you CAN negotiate the price.

When you place a service call the company charges a diagnostic or trip fee to cover the cost of coming to your home and they are just breaking even at this point so they do not want to walk away from a repair. You can use this to negotiate the price for the repair. Believe me, there is a lot of room for negotiation because most companies try and maximize every call they can get their hands on.

So, don’t settle for their first price. Most likely the service technician will look at you with a confused look on his face and tell you they don’t negotiate price. This is usually true as most companies do not allow the service technician to lower a price. However, if you call the office someone will definitely talk with you and will likely lower the cost of the repair to get your business.

It is worth a try, especially on an expensive repair. And remember, most heating and air conditioning repair companies offer maintenance agreements where they give these “special” customers 10-25% off of repairs so there is room to lower their price, and you don’t have to sign up to one of these contracts to get it either!

Heating and Air Conditioning companies routinely mark their parts up by 600-1000%. Wouldn’t it be great if you could go to a website and see what the parts actually cost the company before approving a repair so you know if you are being treated fairly or not? There is such a site. It is Air Conditioning Virginia Beach and I highly recommend you check it out before you pay $200-$400 more for a repair than you should! If you are looking to install a heating or air conditioning system or perhaps both, you will need a professional heating and air conditioning contractor. How do you go about finding the best one? Thankfully there are a number of things you can do to protect yourself from people who are less than professional.

You need to make sure that the company and individual you are dealing with is properly bonded and insured. Never let a contractor from any trade onto your property without first confirming this as if he was to have an accident and be injured or worse you could find yourself being sued.

If you have not been given a personal recommendation to the company be sure to ask for referrals from their existing clients. In particular you will want to speak to clients who have had similar jobs to yours done. There is really no point in you speaking to someone who had a heat pump installed if you only want air conditioning done. Another option you have is to check the company out with the Better Business Bureau. Professional companies will be happy to give you the details of satisfied customers and will understand why you are asking these questions.

Always ask for a fully itemized quote which should include everything relevant to the job in question. You want to know the costs of all the parts as well as the labor and the time line the job is expected to be completed within. It is not always a good idea to engage a company on price alone. You need to feel comfortable around their staff as after all they will be in your home for a certain period of time. You should feel as if you matter to their business rather than just being another order in the book. If you feel that they can’t be bothered spending time answering your questions, then it doesn’t matter if they are the cheapest. You will probably not be happy with the job they do. Your instinct should play a part in the decision making process.

There is a lot of information available on the internet to find the right heating and air conditioning unit for your home. You will have to decide on the manufacturer that best fits the system you want to buy. Also make sure that you check out the warranty that comes with the system to see if it covers parts and labor cost or just parts. Read all the fine print in the warranty because somewhere it should say that you have to have a qualified service company perform a preventative maintenance at least once a year.

Keep those records in a folder so that if your air conditioner was to breakdown you can show that all maintenance has been performed correctly by a service technician so that your warranty will cover the cost your repairs. Due to the cost of having your heating and air conditioning unit repairs down, even if you do not have a warranty your system still needs regular maintenance. Having a preventative maintenance done two times a year is best. A lot of repairs can be prevented by having your system cleaned by you or a service technician.

Having repairs done on your heating and air conditioning unit can be costly when it comes to replacing a compressor, indoor coil, outdoor coil, fan motors and leak repairs. Replacing the major components of your system has to be done by a service technician as per EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards. This is because the major components deal with refrigerant in the system having to be reclaimed or pulled out of your system before you can remove the bad part.

Remember when it comes to replacing parts or performing a preventative maintenance always think of safety and turn off the power first.

When considering maintenance and upkeep for your home in Atlanta, heating and air conditioning should certainly be a priority item. And, just as with any other safety related maintenance issue, those having to do with your heating and air conditioning are just as important. There are a few health and safety issues relating to air conditioning, but it’s really heating repair that most comes to mind when issues of safety are concerned.

When discussing heating or air conditioning, you should know that there are certain things in common to both systems. The motors that run the compressors and air handling fans are normally very reliable, but with continued use and damage from events like lightning strikes, they can become vulnerable to shorting out electrically. This can happen in one of two ways; the insulation on the winding inside the motor can deteriorate and cause the windings to short with each other, or the windings can short to the casing of the motor itself.

In the first case, the motor will most likely overheat. Sometimes there is a manual reset button on the motor, but if it is reset and the motor still overheats it may mean there is an internal short. The case where a motor winding shorts to the case of the motor is very dangerous because it can cause the equipment to become electrified. In both cases, there are safety systems built into your heating and air conditioning, and you should by no means attempt to bypass them. The likely result will be that the system just will not turn on, or it may cause the electrical breaker to the equipment to trip off. In any case, a qualified heating and air conditioning technician should be able to easily identify the fault and effect a safe repair.

Natural gas and propane fueled heaters have their own set of safety concerns. The gas itself has a chemical added to it to make it smell. If you ever smell the characteristic pungent aroma of gas, there could be a leak in the gas piping to your heating equipment, or it might not be igniting properly due to a malfunction. If you perceive the strong smell of gas, you should naturally vacate the premises and call the gas company immediately. However, if you ever detect even a faint smell, it could indicate a problem requiring heating repair.

Another threat is not noticeable at all-this comes from carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO forms from the incomplete combustion of gas and can be vented into your home by malfunctioning equipment. You should have a checkup of your gas heating system every year by a qualified service technician to make sure you don’t have a problem before turning on your heater for the first time. And, if your home uses gas fueled heat, you should also have CO detectors installed to protect you from this invisible threat.

HVAC, heating, and air conditioning technologies are changing faster than ever. These rapid technological advances have made the repair and maintenance of heating and cooling equipment more complex than in previous decades. Individuals who have acquired an HVAC certification, or a heating and air conditioning certification, are usually the most qualified to work on the newest equipment technologies.

Employers believe that students who have received HVAC certification – or, heating and air conditioning certification — are best qualified to work in the field. State-of-the-art, up-to-date training from qualified instructors with field experience helps students in the job market. These students know all of the latest techniques and technologies for maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment, and are the most desirable hires because of that training. Schools like the Refrigeration School, Inc. provide comprehensive heating and cooling technologies training for the acquisition of the HVAC certification.

Acquiring a HVAC certification involves several program components. Students seeking a heating and air conditioning certification will study the design of this equipment, as well as the theory behind the design. They will learn how to maintain, diagnose (or, troubleshoot) and repair heating; ventilation; air conditioning; and refrigeration systems for commercial and residential facilities. This is valuable training for students interested in working in HVAC, heating, and air conditioning careers, because they have opportunities to combine classroom theory with hands-on practices. In addition, students who are knowledgeable in both commercial and residential HVAC systems have more employment opportunities upon completing the heating and air conditioning certification.

The Refrigeration School, Inc. and other HVAC certification and training programs foster the relationships between students and their future places of employment – RSI, for example, offers career placement for students completing the HVAC certification. In addition, these schools provide targeted career counseling and academic assistance to make students’ heating and air conditioning certification experiences complete and useful. Students are encouraged to seek as much academic guidance and career advice as possible from their teachers and other trained HVAC professionals at school, so that their introduction to the “real world” is as smooth as possible.

One of the biggest complaints today about four-year college degree programs is that they do not adequately prepare students for relevant careers. This is never the case for students who forgo the four-year degree to seek HVAC certification. Direct career training and placement are important components of the heating and air conditioning certification process at a technical school. Students find themselves fully prepared to enter careers of growth – and a comprehensive HVAC or heating and air conditioning certification program makes continued success possible.

The Refrigeration School, Inc. offers comprehensive training for HVAC, heating and air conditioning certification. For more information, visit http://www.refrigerationschool.com.
