i take it you havent seen a heatexchange before. by the way while the panel is of the blower moter is not running normally. Amps will be high and air flow will be low…..

Yes, I seen a hx before, but we found the problem anyway. It turns out since the ceilings were high in the playground, the heat would not come down. So we had to turn on the ceiling fans on in order for everything to work like it did before.

The dents help to slow down the flue gasses and allow them more time to stay in contact with the metal exchanger. This increases heat transfer and thus efficiency. They also – to a lesser extent – increase the surface area of the exchanger tube and again increase efficiency.

If there are cracks or holes in the heat exchanger, replace it!
What were you considering? patching it?

Wow, that unit looks in really poor shape, rust everywhere. Especially on the heat exchanger, not a good thing.
